Authentic tasks webinar

Attended the EDUCAUSE Webinar on authentic tasks at Sheridan on Monday Nov. the 3rd. Although the topic was authentic tasks, i.e. learning by doing, the actual presentation was pretty much do what I say not what I do. The best part was the discussion after the formal spiel. Who can be against "authentic tasks" [aka learning by doing], I asked. Many teachers, said somebody from CCFD, wearily. Much chat about the appropriate terminology for the approach being discussed. No consensus, but nobody seeemed very happy with "authentic".

1. Playing professional football (aka soccer) I learned: "You win some, you lose some" (life smarts) and that one coaching size doesn't fit all (metacognition). Experience was the teacher in this case.

2. Teaching in China I learned something every time I had a conversation (the "new" is inherently instructional) if we're comfortable and open to it.
